Business community celebrates its best at Nova Awards ceremony

When the organizing committee for the Timmins Chamber of Commerce's Nova Awards discovered the McIntyre Arena would be the venue, they had two options.

They could either use creative decorating and lighting to mask the hockey-arena feel, or they could accept it.

Mary-Lou Pollon, event co-chairperson of the Nova Awards, said the committee didn't just accept the hockey arena atmosphere - they embraced it.

"Our committee used their imaginations on how we can take this arena and use it as an awards ceremony gala," Pollon said during the award ceremonies held Thursday night.

Garden gurus give sage advice; Group says wait untill soil warms ...

DOWNSTATE - The Master Gardeners of Kent and Sussex counties have been busy lately, fielding dozens of questions from local residents who want to get a jumpstart on their spring gardening.

The group, which provides horticultural advice to Downstaters, opened its gardening hotlines this month, and the calls have been pouring in.

George Brewington, president of the Master Gardeners of Kent County, is glad to see that people are enthusiastic about gardening, but he encourages them not to rush into things.

"The rule of thumb for planting is to try to get past that last big freeze," he said. "That's usually around May 15."

His wife, Marion Brewington, a fellow Master Gardener, said people are often anxious to get in their gardens as soon as the calendar turns to spring.

Gardening for children

"Kids Can Grow," a summer gardening program offered by UNH Cooperation Extension 4-H Youth Development and the UNH Master Gardener program, for youth 8-14 years of age, is just about ready to begin. Have you ever wanted to learn more about gardening? Experience the fun and excitement of planting and watching your vegetables and flowers grow? Would you like to know more about where your food comes from and the nutrition found within? Then consider joining the program for a summer of fun.

You'll be mentored by a UNH Master Gardener, learn about 3'x5' raised bed gardening, and work as a team with other members in our community gardens and have your very own garden at your home.

For information and an application, call the Strafford County 4-H office at 749-4445. The application deadline is April 16, and there is limited space available.
